The Danish 92 Group and the COP15 Climate Summit

During 2009 the Climate Summit (COP15) in Copenhagen was the key priority for the 92 Group and its 22 member organisations. The 92-Group has been engaged in the work of the UN Climate convention ever since it was established at the United Nation's Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, 1992. The 92 Group and many of its membes participate alongside other NGOs in the climate negotiations as observers.

What is the 92 Group working for?

The 92 Group is working for an ambitious, just and sustainable climate agreement with massive reductions in greenhousgas emissions to avert the dangerous rise in temperatures threatening the world today. In the opinion of the 92-Group the rich counties bear the main responsiblity for global warning, and they must take the lead in addressing the problem. Also the rich countries have to assist and support the developing counties towards sustainable growth through low-carbon development paths and to adapt to climate change.

How do we work?
The active engagement of civil society and NGOs such as the 92-Group and its member organisations is key to achieve an ambitious and just climate deal in Copenhagen. Activities at different leves are essential to make it clear to policy-makers, the media and citizens what is needed to achieve the climate deal that is needed. To ensure the common direction, a position paper with joint recommendations have been adopted by the 22 member organisations of the 92 Group, see Climate change - what is happening?

Strengthening Southern NGOs in the climate negotiations
Hundreds of Southern NGOs representatives will get support for participation in the climate negotiations, and  receive capacity training on climate change and advocacy towards their governments, through a project coordinated by the Danish 92-Group in cooperation with six other NGOs. The 92-group is facilitating the meetings. The next one will take place on Nov. 9th and include Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Read more on www.cso2cop15.dk

Other Danish actors
While the 92 Group is focusing on feeding into the decision-making process of official policy-makers in the climate-negotiations, other Danish actors take the lead in coordinating public-awareness projects and campaigns and the mobilisation for COP15.
